Any boffins know of a simple battery back-up available, that I can use for a marine aquarium?

battery back up
chippy69 asked:

I have a marine aquarium and had a very lucky escape last night after a power cut.Fortunately I managed to save all the fish and corals but am now worried that a longer power cut will wipe out the lot.
As I’m no electrician and don’t understand the technical data given after having typed ‘Battery back-up’ into Google,I need some help please.
I’m looking for a simple plug-in system that will support the essentials,(heater, filter box & maybe one powerhead)for as long as possible I guess…something that re-charges itself once power is restored.I need the essentials to plug into it using standard UK plugs.
Is such a thing available or have I just come up with an idea for the ‘Dragon’s Den’ with no brains to make it happen????

get a 12 or 24 volt inverter ( changes 12 or 24 volts dc to 240 volts ac ) a little bit bigger a wattage than you need. one or two 12 volt car battery’s. ( for 24 volts take the negative from the first battery and connect to inverter negative , then take the positive and connect to the negative of the second battery, the positive from second battery to the positive of the inverter ) and to keep things simple , rather than working a “contactor” to switch between the mains power and battery power, buy a battery charger designed to keep battery’s ” topped up ” with out overcharging. rather than go to local car accessory shop etc. look up yellow pages for an auto electrician in your area. tell him what you are doing with the stuff , he / she will give (at a price ) the stuff and the spec. you need. as well as advice on how to set every thing up firthmuir
