My APC battery backup for this desktop keeps alarming and I don’t know why. It’s never done it this frequently, at least once every minute.

Before it’s only done it when there is a blink or sag in the power for a split second… Is the internal battery dying? What is going on?

date & time of pc don’t remain correct?

Why did my computer trip a circuit breaker and why didn’t my surge protector work?

surge protector
Abbey B asked:

I have been using my computer on the same circuit for about a year now with no issues. The other day when I started it, about 10 minutes into using it, I hear a “pop” noise. My computer had tripped a circuit. I went to the box and reset it, and then I smelled smoke. I looked at my surge protector (it is about a $40 surge protector) and the light was still green (good) instead of red (fault). My computer will not turn on now. Hopefully it is just the power supply?

I have a P4 3.0 GHZ processor, 2 GB of RAM, 200GB hard drive running XP professional.

I have already attempted the following:

Higher power supply
APC Battery Backup surge protector
Reformating

Yet I still have this problem. It can be very spontaneous, I can leave the computer on for 30 minutes and the system will freeze, and my music i listen too will have a flat line frequency coming from the speakers, and I cannot do a thing.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated

Last time it froze, Speed fan saw my CPU temp at 60C or 140F…is that too hot?

Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
i’m thinking about buying like this like cooling product that goes over the processor fan….I have been getting different pieces of advice from different people, hence buying the APC and the new power supply (550W)

The other tip I am considering was this product called Thermaltake CPU cooler…any feedback?

My pc is acting up, recently moved, suspect the power, but I’m probably wrong?

I recently moved to an apartment, and immediately my pc started acting up. At first the lcd display of my coolant radiator started flickering and the hard drives sounded like they were stalling, they kept making that hissing sound like they were first powering up, while the computer was already booted. I bought a battery backup for the computer because I thought that might resolve any power quality issues there might have been with the building. This seemed to work (no more problems with the hard drives, but the lcd still flickered), but a few days ago it suddenly decided it wouldn’t boot up all the way. The blue screen of death comes up after the windows xp startup screen appears, and then disappears before its possible to read what the problem is. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Could it be hardware issues? If there’s a better forum for this type of problem please point me to it, thanks.
I build the pc myself, it has an amd 3200 xp, abit NF7 motherboard, geforce 3 agp gpu.

The computer seems to hang on mup.sys before crashing when I try to boot in safe mode.
I can also boot into a linux live cd distro.
I can’t boot into safe mode at all.
The temperatures are good, it’s just the display that flickers. Also the temperature probe on the mainboard always stays well under 50 C. It usually operates around 40 C.
Also, the coolant is only tied to the power supply, and the readout gives the cpu temp which is also verified in bios, and they are never above 50 C

Just built a new PC, what do you think?

I have a simple desk top computer E machine I bought 3 years ago. I never put in a battery backup between the power source and computer. There have been several power outages due to storms and it always came back up running properly after being shut down improperly due to power failure..
Well the other day I accidentally shut off the circuit breaker in the computer room while it was still running WinXp and now when I turn it on I CANNOT….I push power on and NOTHING….Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg to repair? I am thinking of going to local small business computer guy to fix….

Joshua asked:

Ok, I have here a breakdown of my system. I know it may seem like alot, but I would like to know what my system may be worth if I were to sell the entire thing! Everything Works Perfectly and EVERYTHING is in Perfect condition. I will also assume selling it without the Operating System. I use Windows XP Home and it runs Flawless and FAST!! I will list my system first and then I have a few more updates I would still like to do to my system before it is complete. I am just curious how much I would gain if I sold it now compared to selling it with my finished updates. This is my third built computer and I am currently working on 2 more, One that is based on the same setup I have now only using water cooling, and one based upon the Intel Quad Core prossecor. Thank You for your time, it is much appreciated.

My Current Setup:

Monitor: Acer X193w 19″ wide screen
Sound System: Logitech Z-2300
Battery Backup: APC BP1100
Printer: Epson Stylus All In One with LCD and card reader CX6000
Drives: ATAPI Combo DVD CD drive, Sony CD drive
Hard drive: IDE 40GB
Graphics Card: Zotac 512mb 64bit Nvidia 8400GS
PCIx16: Ralink Wifi, Kworld Tv Tuner/Capture Device, 5 USB+3FireWire card
Motherboard: Foxconn 6497MB-ERS
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Prescott (I currently run a fully stable 3.28GHz Overclock. 25C Idle,56C MAX)
RAM: Generic PC3200 1.5 GB
Power supply: ATX 480 watt

Game Elements Wireless Gamepad, Logitech Joystick, Logitech Gamer Headphones w/Mic, Logitech G15 keyboard, Philips Webcam, Generic Blue LED Mouse, Generic Blue LED Mousepad, 5 LEDs in the Case, 2-80mm Logisys fan, One 120mm Logisys fan, one 92mm Thermacool fan-all fans light up blue, and 2 Link Depot Round Blue IDE Cables.

For my upgrade, I will keep Everything except for the following changes:

Upgrade Hard drive: 2-SATA 500GB HDD run in RAID 1 configuration
Upgrade Ram: Kingston PC3200 2GB Matched Set with a 3 Latency
Upgrade Graphics Card: 1GB 8600 Nvidia GT 128bit
Upgrade: Wireless Mouse, Wireless Printer
Upgrade: 3.5 Floppy and 3.5 Card Reader

Lose the Sony CD drive and place a Thermaltake pull out drawer and Removable hard drive tray(keep the old 40gb in this one for backup). As well as a Scythe Speaker set.

I have recently started this hobby building computers. I really LOVE it. I only build them for myself and family though for right now. I do know it saves a lot of money compared to store bought junk. So I am actually considering starting this as a part time job. So I was just curious what the resale value of these are after a build. Thank You Again for Your time.
I have the Enlight EN-4203 Gamers Case
Microgeek claims that my system sold as is is worth 1000-1500 depending on the buyer, and would be worth 1800-2000 after upgrades. BUT, with my system being currently used, it is worth between 800-1000 as is. and would be 1200-1500 used upgraded. So I think it is pretty good.

Randy W asked:

I had it plugged into a power supply, but not a battery backup. This morning when I woke up I saw my alarm was flashing so I assumed we lost power for a little bit, and my computer was off. Now when I go to turn my computer on nothing happens, the fans dont turn or anything. Im pretty sure its the power supply, but would like to confirm with someone who knows more about the issue than me. Does it sound like its just the power supply? or is my whole computer fried?
