They won't work because you have taken away their source of power. Same as a power outage. The base/charger only has power when the outlet does. The phone must have the base which is plugged into the jack to operate. just get a cheap corded phone to plug in in an emergency. hope this makes some since and helps. You can't charge your cell phone unless you have one of those battery powered thingies. A corded phone costs only around 10 bucks these days, so it's really not so bad.
