Dim the screen. That’s probably the biggest power user.

I have found that if every time I interrupt my work for a little while I just shut the lid, everything “goes to sleep” (go ahead and laugh, I don’t know the language!), and I save on battery. If instead I turn the laptop off, it uses a lot more battery to come back on. Together with the previous tip, this might help a bit.

Make sure to disable any unnessessary applications/startup programs. Usually many items in your lower righthand taskbar (system tray) load when Windows starts… some can be configured not to start automatically. If your not on going to use the Internet, disable your Local Area Network and Wireless connections-on Dells the LAN connection is usually automatically disabled when on battery power. Also limit the number of programs your have open at any one time. Of course viewing DVD or using other multimedia apps will use more battery power than most apps. Try not using a 3D screen saver, they use more graphics processing then non 3D savers. Remember that a portable computer battery life is on average, about one year. If your battery is nearing that mark it may not hold a charge as long as it used to. Dell will replace a battery if it’s within warranty–one year from date of invoice (on batteries), I believe. If it appears that battery life is declining, then contact Dell before your warranty expires-batteries are not very cheap.
