The PSP has a lithium battery in it, this is a vital controller on all electronics with a clock, VCR's, Phones, PC's and the PSP of course. The battery will last around a week on the PSP, sometimes a bit more, if this battery goes flat the PSP will prompt you to input the time and date next time you start it up. It's is very clever but at the same time it is so simple, the battery is about twice the size of a standard watch battery and will clip into the PSP's mother board.

because it is supposed to do that in order for your system to get time right and not reset every time you get your battery out

Computers have a small internal battery. It lasts sooo many years and unless you have ever had to change on, you might not even realize it. I'm guessing the PSP has something similar.
