Its using induction charge principle. Essentially the primary coil side of the transformer is built into the base and the secondary coil is built into the toothbrush.

The primary winding of the inductive charger transmits charging power to the secondary winding, inside the target device, without making direct electrical or mechanical contact with it. In the target device, power is received with a coil and then rectified by a diode. This DC voltage is used in charging the battery of the device. ballman

What you have there is an induction charger. In simple terms it works because electricty generates a field. You can see this yourself by placing a compass near a copper wire carrying an electric current. The field generated by the current will move the compass needle. That field will quite happily travel through plastic. Your induction charger utilises that field to generate an electric charge within you toothbrush battery that is capable of recharging it.

You can also by electric kettles or jugs that use induction. They don't need to be plugged diretcly into the circuit instead they rest on a plastic base that contains the wiring that is connected. kurdiatcha

sonicare? anyhow i read about nicoli tesla and his experimnets he was doing in colorado, he was transporting electricty across vast distances without cables and wanted to revolutionize the world, however money got in the way and no-one would help him, cause he tried to develop free electricity. not really an answer though :( mick
