How well does a surge protector work during a thunder storm?

Just wondering. I pretty much live in tornado alley, and it’s that magical time of year where I’m bombarded with thunderstorms; because of this, I frequently find myself unplugging all of my electronics. I’m asking three questions in one.

Just wondering. I pretty much live in tornado alley, and it’s that magical time of year where I’m bombarded with thunderstorms; because of this, I frequently find myself unplugging all of my electronics. I’m asking three questions in one.
1) How well does a surge protector work in a thunderstorm?
2) Where can I find a surge protector?
3) Is it still a myth that unplugging your computer during a thunderstorm can help protect your electronics?
Thanks, your answers are always appreciated!

Well if it is a desktop I recommend leaving your computer off during thunderstorms. I can’t attest to the effectiveness of surge protectors other than the fact that I had one that didn’t do its job. My X-box got fried during a thunderstorm.
Unplugging your tv def helps in a thunderstorm because the capacitor will continually charge and uncharge rapildy until it fails or the surge passes.
You can get a surge protector at any major chain like walmart, bestbuy, circuit city.
