Their belief that only a huge, 20 lb, device can correctly stop the power spikes described is also incorrect. I have personally witnessed a public electric utility dropping one of three phases to a major manufacturing facility and the damage it caused (it killed all of the printers in the building, besides lots of other things). You should seriously consider a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for your LCD television and the rest of your entertainment equipment. Most projection TV's require that the fan keep cooling the projection light bulb after the power is turned off. If the power goes out when you have the set on, you'll get to pay for a new bulb (and installation, if you don't know how to do it). The UPS is expensive, but what would it cost to replace your TV and Xbox? A LOT more. I have a UPS with data line protection on my computer system; my entertainment system will be replaced soon and I plan on adding a UPS then.
