If I have my computer plugged into a surge protector, will it save my computer from being ruined?

surge protector
Buck Nasty asked:

Like just a week or two ago, a storm knocked out our power and that ruined my last computer, because it was plugged in directly to the outlet. Well someone said if I had plugged it into a surge protector, it would have saved my computer from being damaged. This current computer is in a surge protector and it’s starting to storm out and getting windy. So if the power goes out again, will my computer be alright this time?

It can help, but only if it has USL listed on it, the US is full of small wire count and generic looking power strips and surge protectors that catch on fire!
If the hit was too much, a computer and other devices can still be destroyed, but the chances of protection are much greater when using one. Some hits to houses are so violent that the protector cant deal with them.
Friend had one fried, who knows how good her surge protector was though, a few years back. I have them on everything, never had a direct hit yet to test them out. But I did speak extensivly to a sales person, as they have features for phone lines and other things and I wanted to know how they all work etc.

The cheap type (more of a power ’strip’) have a 1 time protection; after that; although they still supply power, the protection is null.
High-end units do offer multi-trip protection.
Read the product description carefully to determine this aspect of the device.
