If I turn a strip surge protector off in order to save electricity will it still protect my electronic equip?

surge protector
bse48 asked:

My laptop, printer, etc are plugged into a strip surge protector. If I turn the surge protector off in an effort to save money, will it still protect my equipment? I would like to turn everything off at night and turning the strip off would be convenient but I want to still have my electronic equip protected.

  1. TalentedChimp Says:

Unplug it if you’re still concerned.

you will not conserve any electricity that is some crap that computers use lots of energy when they are off. I have a UPS and it registers less than a milliwatt when everything is off.

  3. You did what? Says:

Are you turning the strip off because you believe the strip consumes power or do you turn your devices off using the strip.

Turning the strip off saves you nothing power wise. Don’t turn it off if that is your goal. Protection would depend on whether the manufacturer has the diodes before or after the switch. But with the switch off where would the power go anyway. Not to your devices.

If you are concerned about lightning, surge protectors won’t help. You need to unplug. Surges are for protecting against “brownouts” that can damage electronic equipment. Not an issue if turned off.
