Turning the strip off saves you nothing power wise. Don't turn it off if that is your goal. Protection would depend on whether the manufacturer has the diodes before or after the switch. But with the switch off where would the power go anyway. Not to your devices. If you are concerned about lightning, surge protectors won't help. You need to unplug. Surges are for protecting against "brownouts" that can damage electronic equipment. Not an issue if turned off.
