Increase UPS backup time?

battery backup
pn_renju asked:

I have an old UPS rated around 500VA. It uses a 12V 7.5Ah sealed lead acid battery.? I have a 12V 250Ah car battery also. Can I replace my UPS battery with car battery. I’ve heared that it may cause come problem with the charger. If I can not replace the battery can I use the car battery by charging externally?. This is for using the same as an inverter at my home(Any explanation, details, links or schematics wolud be appreciated).

Only the manufacturer of the UPS can give you a fair answer for your question.
If you connect another 12V7.5Ah battery in parallel, the back up time will be doubled but the charging current also will be doubled. With your existing system the battery is charging at 750mA. Ask the supplier of the UPS if the UPS can deliver 1.5A charging current. If he accepts your proposal you can double the back up time. Otherwise leave it as it is.
