Is this an overload on my surge protector?

surge protector
Amplified Distortion asked:

I have my computer which has a power supply that ranges between 300-400 watts, my LCD Monitor, and my playstation 3 all plugged into the same surge protector. The box said it could handle up to 150,000 joules or something like that. Is my surge protector able to handle this much power on it. Or is it overloaded.

  1. dp Says:

The joules spec indicates how much energy the protector can absorb without failing in the event of a voltage surge, e.g., a lightning strike.

It’s unlikely the equipment you mention is overloading the protector, which is a different issue. Most surge protectors are rated at 15 amps/125 volts — the same as most home circuit breakers. If you want to be sure, though, add up the number of amps the equipment is rated at and compare against the rated value shown on the protector.
