Right now, the most efficient battery for a car (Gasoline or diesel car) is the wet cell, lead acid battery.

As far as the environmental impact, both wet and dry cell batteries are made with heavy metals and a toxic electrolyte of some sort. Therefore, they are both dangerous to the environment. Both wet and dry cell batteries can be recycled.

All batteries have different charging and discharge characteristics. Wet cell batteries come in shallow and deep cycle forms depending on intended use. What battery to use depends on application.

The fumes from wet cell batteries aren't usually toxic, they give off mostly hydrogen and oxygen. The danger is that the gasses will ignite, not a problem in a well ventilated engine compartment, but a real problem in a poorly vented electronics cabinet. ssg/emt

There's a lot more to this story than what you've been told. With several different types of "dry" batteries ex:lithium, nicad, carbon, etc. And variations of "wet" batteries ,usually lead/acid both sealed, gel cell, and traditional, advantages and disadvantages to all types need to be addressed. For a gas powered car,the standard lead battery is best for price and purpose. wildmanny2
