what is the normal battery backup time for laptops? probably a newly purchased one?

my acer aspire 4930 laptop on full charge gives me only 2.15 hrs of battery even when i keep it idle .i even tried fully charging and discharging it but its still the same. is it fine? or should it give longer backup as it is a newly purchased one.
first time, it let it charge for about 7 hours or so.
