How long do Ni-MH batteries last if they are unused after being charged?

I love the simplicity of digital cameras, but I get dissappointed at how fast my rechargeable batteries get drained. I use FujiFilm 2300 Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries for my Fuji Digi cam. The problem I’m having is that when I go to an event such as a sporting event, the batteries get very low after about 20-30 pictures are taken. So what I am wondering is, if I buy an extra set of batteries and fully charge them, and bring them with me to the event as a backup, will they still hold that charge so that I can stick those in the camera, once the other pair drains?
