Is plugging an AC window unit into a surge protector safe?

I just moved into my dorm room and realized the electrical outlet on my side of the room is occupied by the AC window unit. I’ve heard that plugging window units into a surge protector with other electronic devices plugged in is dangerous. Should I use the surge protector for this or try to find another outlet?

Do I really need to plug-in an old corded phone in order to use land line during power outage?
