Is there any electrical danger to use an extension cord to hook up a surge protector?

I have in my head that it increases the risk of starting a fire. I’m not sure where I heard it, or if it’s even true. Nothing to long, maybe just a 25ft cable (from the wall) hooking to a 6 strip surge protector.

If I turn a strip surge protector off in order to save electricity will it still protect my electronic equip?

My laptop, printer, etc are plugged into a strip surge protector. If I turn the surge protector off in an effort to save money, will it still protect my equipment? I would like to turn everything off at night and turning the strip off would be convenient but I want to still have my electronic equip protected.
