Battery backup on my PC makes clicking sound?

It has done this twice now in the last 3 weeks, both times it’s happened was when the weather was bad outside — really windy a few weeks ago and really stormy today. Then a battery icon pops up in my icon list and it says 30 minutes of battery time remaining? I will unplug the battery backup and plug it back in and the clicking goes away. Anyone have an idea what’s wrong with it? We’ve had it for 3 years.
