What is causing my battery to constantly die?

battery
Matt asked:

I have a 2002 Explorer and the battery will periodically die for no reason at all. Every time I turn off the engine, I try to make sure everything is off. And like once every couple of months, I will be surprised with a dead battery. I am on my 3rd battery and they all have done the same thing. I was wondering if it was the computer causing the battery to go dead.

You may have a relay sticking causing some device in the car to continue running even though you turned it off.

Consult a service manual for relay locations or ask your mechanic. sparky_622000

Maybe you need a new alternator…. Blaxican 4 Lyfe

Sometimes lights stay on, like under the hood, glove compartment etc. Check those. harryb

Well if you have a new battery the litte needed power from the computer(when car is off) should NOT be the reason your batts are dieing because plenty of people drive 02 explorers and are not having this problem. So if i was you i would get my alternator checked. Im pretty sure autozone does it for free. green72montecarlo

i worked at an auto auction for a long time and if an explorer battery was dead it was usually because a door or most often the tailgate wasn’t completely shut. hookerln
