What is the best spring airsoft rifle or shotgun for $50 or less?

Look into the Double Eagle (DE) 3-shot shotguns about $49-$65. Try Evike.com or Airsplat.com for those. Can’t recommend any AEG for less then $90 as a backup.
For $50 or less you’re better off buying a $40 NBB pistol as a backup. Moondog

Look, other than Classic Army and other expensive brands, DBOYS makes the best M4 around. But if it doesn’t satisfy you get a UTG M3 pump shotgun or a cheap sniper rifle.
