What is the expected life of a Laptop battery?
nehla s asked:
I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a 9 cell battery. May I know how long the battery will be good for use. Mine is just over a year old and refuses to charge. Till four days back it gave me a backup of about 4 hours regularly, but now its stuck at 14% and not charging. Is it usual for batteries to last only so long. The warranty ran out about 2 weeks ago, so Dell wont replace the battery. It is not an OS issue as the problem is common when I am using Windows Vista and Debian.

if you leave the battery in the laptop all the time they will last about a year.if you remove them >a few years

You can expect to get 500-800 charging cycle or 18-24 months. If you use the laptop a lot the time may be less.
Batteries need to be conditioned at least once a month with a complete discharge and then a full charge to help the batteries stay healthy. Running the laptop on both the AC/DC adapter with the battery inserted will quickly drain the battery life from the battery and it will not last as long.
You can try to let the battery drain a little bit more and then try a full charge without using the laptop and see if something kicks in. If you do not getting a better reading, it sounds like the battery is dead.
If you purchase a new battery, be sure to conduct a full charge and discharge 2-3 times before using regularly. This will help initiate those battery cells to work at full capacity. Remember to condition at least once a month as mentioned above, remove the battery whenever using the AC/DC power and set your laptop on battery save mode when in use.
Also, your battery run-time will vary daily depending on what you are running on the computer. WiFi and video streaming use up a lot of battery watt hours compared to having only your OS on. Recommend using AC/DC for WiFi and video streaming when you can.

well i think it is the issue of “memory effect”, you should drain the laptop battery(100% discharge) and overcharge the battery for 4-5 hours.the effect may disappear.if this not work, you’d better get a new one

Battery life depend on battery age and laptop’s output watts. New dell battery can last 2.5-3.5 hours and be used normally for 1.5-2 years.
