A UPS u have the option to turn it off manually or automatically. Companies such as APC offer a USB cord that connects between the UPS and the computer. When the battery is becoming low it lets Windows know and it shuts down automatically. U must install the software it brings so it could do that. If u do not connect the USB cord it will not shut off automatically us must shut it off. APC are the best and reliable.

If you are referring to a UPS Backup Unit similar to APC or other manufactured units this allows you time to shutdown the computer. or to continue to use the computer during the power outage. most will allow sufficient time to save all of your work, and shutdown the computer. However if your power outages are minor in time you may save your work and continue using until utility power has been restored.
